What Is Microsoft Power Apps?

Power Apps offers two main types of app. Canvas apps give full control of layout, so they suit task-focused mobile and tablet apps such as inspections or field data capture. Model-driven apps are generated from a Dataverse data model, with forms, views, dashboards and business process flows, so they suit data-heavy back-office applications. Formulas are written in Power Fx, a low-code language based on Excel formulas.

Apps can use Dataverse, SharePoint, SQL Server and hundreds of connectors as data sources. Delegation limits decide how much data a canvas app can filter on the server, which affects design for large tables. Apps run in browsers, Teams and the Power Apps mobile app, and are packaged in solutions for controlled deployment.

When Power Apps is a good fit

  • You need an internal app quickly and your users have Microsoft 365.
  • Processes run on spreadsheets, email or paper forms.
  • Data should live in Dataverse or SharePoint with controlled access.
  • Business teams will help maintain the app afterwards.

How Power Apps Fits Your Stack

Power Apps is part of Microsoft Power Platform. Data usually lives in Dataverse or SharePoint, processes run in Power Automate, and reports come from Power BI.

When an app outgrows low-code, for example with complex logic, very large data or public users at scale, we build a custom application in .NET and can keep Power Apps for internal screens.

Implementation Considerations

  • Design for delegation so filters and searches work on large tables.
  • Choose Dataverse or SharePoint by security, relationships and volume needs.
  • Check licensing: premium connectors and Dataverse need premium licences.
  • Build reusable components to keep apps consistent.
  • Test on the devices users actually have, including offline needs.
  • Package apps in solutions from the start.

Power Apps Questions, Answered

What is Power Apps?

Microsoft's low-code platform for building business apps that run in browsers, Teams and mobile devices.

Canvas or model-driven app?

Canvas apps suit task-focused, custom-designed apps. Model-driven apps suit data-heavy processes built on Dataverse.

What are delegation limits?

Rules about which filters a data source can process on the server. Ignoring them can make apps miss records on large tables.

Can Power Apps work offline?

Yes, with offline support for model-driven and canvas apps on mobile, within certain limits.

How is Power Apps licensed?

Through per-app or per-user premium plans; some standard scenarios are included in Microsoft 365. We check what your app needs.

Can you take over an app built by our staff?

Yes. We review it, fix issues and bring it under proper release management.
