n8n workflow automation

n8n Workflow Automation

Self-hosted or cloud automation with code when you need it and AI agents built in.

n8n is a workflow automation tool that teams can host themselves or use as a cloud service. It combines visual workflows, hundreds of integrations, custom JavaScript or Python code and AI agent nodes. We design, build, host and support n8n workflows for business and technical teams.

What we cover

  • Workflow design
  • AI agent workflows
  • Code nodes and custom integrations
  • Self-hosting and queue mode
  • Credentials and access control
  • Monitoring and error workflows

What Is n8n?

n8n builds automations as workflows of connected nodes. Triggers start a workflow from a webhook, a schedule, an app event or a chat message; nodes then call services, transform data, branch and loop. Hundreds of built-in integrations cover common SaaS tools and databases, the HTTP Request node reaches any API, and Code nodes run JavaScript or Python when visual nodes are not enough.

n8n can run in n8n Cloud or on your own infrastructure with Docker or Kubernetes, which keeps data inside your network. Queue mode spreads executions across worker processes for higher volumes. Its AI nodes, built on LangChain, let workflows call language models, use tools and keep memory. n8n is distributed under a fair-code licence, so check the terms if you plan to offer it to your own customers as part of a product.

When n8n is a good fit

  • You want to self-host automation and keep data in your own environment.
  • Workflows need custom code, complex branching or many API calls.
  • You are not tied to Microsoft 365, or use a mix of tools.
  • You want AI agents inside automations with full control over prompts and tools.

What Teams Automate With n8n

Common n8n workflows.

  • SaaS integration

Sync CRM, support, billing and marketing tools.

  • AI agent workflows

Classify, summarise and route requests with language models.

  • Inbox and form processing

Turn emails and form entries into records and tasks.

  • Data movement

Move and reshape data between databases and APIs.

  • Webhook back ends

    Lightweight APIs and event handlers.

  • Chat assistants

Chat-triggered workflows that use your tools.

  • Scheduled reports

    Collect data and send summaries.

  • Internal operations

    Onboarding, access requests and alerts.

How n8n Fits Your Stack

n8n works with any system that has an API, including GraphQL and REST services, databases such as SQL Server, and AI models from several providers. Its AI nodes build on LangChain, and workflows can call MCP servers.

Organisations centred on Microsoft 365 often prefer Power Automate. Some use both: Power Automate for Microsoft 365 processes and n8n for technical or self-hosted integrations.

Implementation Considerations

  • Self-hosting means you own updates, backups and security patches.
  • Use queue mode and separate workers for production volumes.
  • Store credentials in n8n's credential store, never in workflow code.
  • Add an error workflow so failures are reported.
  • Review the fair-code licence for your use case.
  • Version workflows with source control and separate environments.

How We Work With n8n

The same four steps we use across our technology work, adapted to your scope.

  1. Discover

Goals, users, constraints and the systems n8n must work with.

  2. Select

Confirm n8n is the right fit and agree the architecture and scope.

  3. Build and integrate

Deliver in short iterations with testing, reviews and documentation.

  4. Operate and improve

Monitor, support and improve the solution as your needs change.

n8n Questions, Answered

What is n8n?

A workflow automation tool with visual workflows, many integrations, code nodes and AI agent nodes, available self-hosted or in the cloud.

Is n8n open source?

n8n uses a fair-code licence: the source is available and self-hosting is free for internal use, with restrictions on offering it commercially to others.

Can n8n run on our own servers?

Yes, with Docker or Kubernetes, which keeps data inside your environment.

Can n8n use AI models?

Yes. AI nodes connect to several model providers and support agents with tools and memory.

n8n or Power Automate?

n8n suits self-hosted and code-heavy automation. Power Automate suits Microsoft 365-centred organisations.

How do you scale n8n?

With queue mode, separate worker processes and a shared database and queue.
