Azure DevOps implementation

Azure DevOps Implementation

Plan, build, test and release software with Microsoft's delivery platform.

Azure DevOps provides boards, Git repositories, pipelines, test plans and package feeds in one service. We set it up for delivery teams, build reliable YAML pipelines, and help organisations improve or move their existing setup.

What we cover

  • Boards and work tracking
  • Repos and branch policies
  • YAML pipelines
  • Test Plans and quality gates
  • Artifacts and package feeds
  • Security and service connections

What Is Azure DevOps?

Azure DevOps is Microsoft's set of services for software delivery. Azure Boards tracks work with backlogs and sprints, Azure Repos hosts Git repositories with branch policies and pull requests, Azure Pipelines builds and deploys code to any cloud or on-premises target, Azure Test Plans manages manual and exploratory testing, and Azure Artifacts hosts NuGet, npm, Maven and Python packages. It is available as a cloud service and as Azure DevOps Server for on-premises use.

Pipelines are best defined in YAML and stored with the code, using templates for consistency across projects. Environments, approvals and checks control releases, and service connections, ideally using workload identity federation instead of stored secrets, give pipelines access to Azure and other targets.

When Azure DevOps is a good fit

  • You want planning, code, pipelines and tests in one Microsoft service.
  • You need detailed work tracking and traceability for regulated delivery.
  • You deploy to Azure, on-premises servers or several environments with approvals.
  • You already use Azure DevOps and want it working better.

What Teams Use Azure DevOps For

Typical delivery set-ups we build and improve.

  • Agile planning

Backlogs, sprints and dashboards for several teams.

  • Code collaboration

Git repositories with pull request policies.

  • Continuous integration

Build and test on every change.

  • Continuous deployment

Release to Azure and other targets with approvals.

  • Infrastructure deployment

Run Bicep or Terraform through pipelines.

  • Test management

Plan and record manual and exploratory testing.

  • Package management

    Private feeds for shared libraries.

  • Migration

Move from TFVC, Jenkins or older servers, or to GitHub.

How Azure DevOps Fits Your Stack

Azure DevOps builds and deploys .NET, Python, Node.js and data workloads, including Azure Data Factory and Power Platform solutions, to Azure and other targets.

Microsoft continues to support Azure DevOps while investing heavily in GitHub. Some teams combine them, for example Azure Boards with GitHub repositories, and developers can use GitHub Copilot in their editors with either.

Implementation Considerations

  • Prefer YAML pipelines in source control over classic UI pipelines.
  • Use templates so every project follows the same build and security steps.
  • Replace stored secrets with workload identity federation where possible.
  • Protect main branches with required reviews and builds.
  • Keep self-hosted agents patched, or use Microsoft-hosted agents.
  • Decide whether to stay on Azure DevOps or move to GitHub before large investments.

How We Work With Azure DevOps

The same four steps we use across our technology work, adapted to your scope.

  1. Discover

Goals, users, constraints and the systems Azure DevOps must work with.

  2. Select

Confirm Azure DevOps is the right fit and agree the architecture and scope.

  3. Build and integrate

Deliver in short iterations with testing, reviews and documentation.

  4. Operate and improve

Monitor, support and improve the solution as your needs change.

Azure DevOps Questions, Answered

What is Azure DevOps?

Microsoft's software delivery service with Boards, Repos, Pipelines, Test Plans and Artifacts.

Is Azure DevOps being replaced by GitHub?

Microsoft continues to support and update Azure DevOps, while GitHub receives most new investment. We help you choose based on your needs.

Can Azure DevOps deploy to AWS or on-premises servers?

Yes. Pipelines can deploy to any target reachable by an agent or service connection.

Can you convert classic pipelines to YAML?

Yes. We rebuild them as YAML with templates and test them side by side.

Can you migrate from Azure DevOps to GitHub?

Yes. We plan the move of repositories, pipelines and work tracking, and run them in parallel where needed.

What is workload identity federation?

A way for pipelines to access Azure without stored secrets, using short-lived tokens.
