What Is Microsoft Copilot Studio?

Copilot Studio is Microsoft's low-code tool for building agents. An agent combines instructions, knowledge sources such as SharePoint sites, files, websites or Dataverse tables, and actions that call connectors, Power Automate flows or APIs. Generative orchestration lets the agent decide which knowledge or action to use for each request.

Agents can be published to Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365 Copilot, a website or other channels, and some can run on triggers without a user starting the conversation. Because Copilot Studio is part of Microsoft Power Platform, environments, data loss prevention policies and solution-based deployment apply to agents in the same way as to apps and flows.

When Copilot Studio is a good fit

  • Your staff already work in Microsoft 365 and Teams.
  • The knowledge lives in SharePoint, OneDrive, Dataverse or well-structured websites.
  • Business teams need to maintain the agent after it is built.
  • You need agents quickly, without building and hosting a custom application.

Where Teams Use Copilot Studio

Common agent types. Each one has a defined audience, knowledge scope and set of permitted actions.

How Copilot Studio Fits Your Stack

Copilot Studio is part of Microsoft Power Platform. Actions usually run through Power Automate, structured data often sits in Microsoft Dataverse, and knowledge comes from SharePoint and Microsoft 365.

When an agent needs custom models, advanced retrieval or code-level control, we build that part in Microsoft Foundry and connect it to the Copilot Studio agent, or expose tools through Model Context Protocol.

Implementation Considerations

  • Agents answer from the content they can reach, so tidy, current and well-permissioned SharePoint content matters most.
  • Licensing is based on usage capacity; we estimate message volume before rollout.
  • DLP policies decide which connectors an agent may use, so they need to be set before makers start.
  • Test with real questions from the target users, including questions the agent should refuse.
  • Actions that change data should confirm with the user and log what was done.
  • Plan ownership: who updates knowledge and reviews analytics each month.

Copilot Studio Questions, Answered

What is Microsoft Copilot Studio?

A low-code Microsoft tool for building agents that use your knowledge sources and actions, published to Teams, Microsoft 365 Copilot, websites and other channels.

Do we need developers to use Copilot Studio?

Not for many agents. Developers help with custom connectors, complex flows, security and integration with systems that have no ready connector.

Can a Copilot Studio agent use our SharePoint documents?

Yes. SharePoint is a common knowledge source, and the agent respects the user's existing permissions when answering.

How is Copilot Studio licensed?

It uses capacity-based licensing for agent messages, and some Microsoft 365 Copilot licences include usage in certain scenarios. We check the current terms with you before rollout.

Can agents take actions, not just answer questions?

Yes, through Power Automate flows, connectors and APIs. We add confirmations and logging for actions that change data.

When should we use Microsoft Foundry instead?

When you need custom application code, advanced retrieval, your own evaluation pipeline or models beyond what Copilot Studio offers.
